Peanuts

Texas is the second-largest peanut-producing state in the nation. The Texas peanut industry is worth over $1 billion to the state's economy. In 2008, Texas peanut farmers produced 860 million pounds of peanuts on 257,000 acres, making it the largest crop in the state's history. Peanut farmers, shellers, equipment dealers, manufacturers and labor make up a portion of the industry that has become invaluable to Texas.  Typically, Texas peanuts are planted in April and May, and then are harvested in October and November.

Peanuts are not just for baseball games anymore. Research has shown peanuts and peanut butter are a good source of protein, niacin, magnesium, phosphorus and vitamin E. Also, new scientific evidence has shown peanuts are a useful tool in fighting off high cholesterol, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. The Texas Peanut Producers Board headquarters is in Lubbock, Texas.
